How Roommate Matching Works

Transparent, rule-based compatibility — no black box. You see exactly what each profile shares and how scores are calculated.

1. Complete the Questionnaire

Every roommate profile uses an 8-section questionnaire. Fill as much as you want — the more you answer, the better your matches:

  1. About You — name, age, situation, student/professional, bio
  2. Budget & Housing — rent range, neighborhoods, move-in dates, amenities
  3. Roommate Preferences — ideal age, gender pref, household size
  4. Daily Life — sleep, WFH, cooking, noise, workouts, drinking
  5. Social & Guests — introvert/extrovert, parties, quiet hours, hobbies
  6. Pets, Smoking & Health — dealbreakers, allergies
  7. Current Place — if you already have a spot to fill
  8. Contact — phone, email, languages, profile visibility

Profiles show a completion percentage and an availability status so you can see how much info is available at a glance.

2. Browse with Filters

Search by situation, profile type, max budget, and neighborhood checkboxes. Each card shows:

3. Compatibility Scoring (Our "Matchmaking Tech")

When you're logged in with your own profile, we calculate a compatibility score (0–100%) for every other profile. This is rule-based matching — not AI — and we show you the full breakdown:

Situation (up to 25 pts)

Best match: someone with a place + someone seeking one. Two seekers can also match to search together.

Budget (up to 20 pts)

Overlapping monthly budget ranges score higher. Flexible budgets get partial credit.

Neighborhoods (up to 20 pts)

Shared preferred neighborhoods from our Boston list boost the score.

Lifestyle (up to 25 pts)

Sleep schedule, cleanliness, guests, smoking, and pets — conflicts reduce the score; alignment increases it.

Move-in timing (up to 10 pts)

Closer move-in dates score higher. Missing dates get neutral partial credit.

Profile type (up to 5 pts)

Same student/professional type gets a small bonus.

Score tiers: 80%+ Excellent · 65%+ Strong · 50%+ Good · 35%+ Possible

4. Suggested Matches

On the browse page, logged-in users with a complete profile see a "Suggested for You" section — profiles ranked by compatibility score using the criteria above.

5. Message Directly

Found a match? Send a message through the platform. Roommate search is separate from rental listings — you're connecting with people, not landlords.
